How to Immigrate to Canada?

We have narrowed down the most popular ways to get on to Canadian Immigration, i.e. Express Entry.

Introduced in January 2015 by the Federal Government, the Canada Express Entry System is the most comprehensive and popular pathway to apply for Canadian citizenship and permanent residence. The system manages applications for Canada PR visa submitted via economic migration programs. Following are these economic migration programs managed under Express Entry System:

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades (FST)

The Express Entry also allows provinces and territories to leverage this system to invite more suitable and efficient international professionals as part of their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

The Provincial Nominee Program route is increasingly becoming one of the popular ways to migrate to Canada from India. Canadian provinces such as Ontario, Alberta, British Colombia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, etc. have their own immigration programs to welcome newcomers from different parts across the world. Under this category, candidates are generally required to live in that specific province after they arrive in Canada. Further in order to qualify, most of the PNPs require a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.

Which documents are required?

You will not need to upload any document to submit an Express Entry profile, however, it is important to have the following documents as they may have the information needed to complete your profile:

  • Passport
  • Language test results
  • Education assessment report
  • Provincial nomination (if applicable)
  • Job offer from a Canadian employer (in writing)

You will also need to know your NOC (National Occupational Classification) job title or code. The NOC system classifies your occupation based on your employment duties and the type of work that you do.

How long does the Immigration process take?

In Canadian immigration, the processing time is how long it takes authorities with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to process your application, from the day they receive it to the day they reach a conclusive decision.

Please note that processing time does not include the time it may take to submit an expression of interest and receive an Invitation to Apply, to prepare documents, to submit an application, or for the mailing of finalized visas, status cards, permits, etc.

Different processing times for different Immigration programs

If you have opted for the Express Entry program to apply for your visa, the average time taken to process your visa shall be 6 months, subject to various conditions.

For the Express Entry program, you will have to fill an online application which is placed in the Express Entry pool and it will be ranked in relation to other applications based on your CRS (comprehensive ranking system). If you clear the cut-off, you will get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for your permanent residency.

If you have opted for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), the processing time is similar to the Express Entry program, but it takes a little longer. The processing time takes an average of 12 months, again subject to various conditions.
