Before you apply to extend your study permit, make sure your school is on the Designated Learning Institution (DLIs) list, available on the official website.

If your school is no longer on the DLI list, you can keep studying until your current permit expires. When you need to extend your study permit, you’ll need to enroll at a DLI.

In most cases, you apply online to extend your study permit.

The study permit extension application must be submitted electronically unless otherwise specified.

The Canadian government requires that most temporary residence applications made from within Canada be made through electronic application, including:

  • all applications for extensions of temporary resident status made from within Canada
  • all applications for study or work permits made from within Canada
  • all applications for renewals of study or work permits made from within Canada

The student should plan ahead to ensure this application is submitted in advance of the expiration date of their current permit.

What is the processing time for Canada Study Permit Extension?

The processing time varies and can take several months. If you haven’t applied for restoration of study permit and more than 90 days have passed from the expiry date, you have to leave the country and apply for a new study permit from your country of residence/citizenship.
